On 2 June 2017 a brand-new football club for the city of Volos was officially presented. On 2 June 2027 Volos NFC turns 10. It is only a decade, but a decade lived at a fast pace.

A new team for the city

For years, talks about merging the city's two older clubs, Niki and Olympiakos Volos, had come to nothing. In April 2017, on the initiative of then mayor Achilleas Beos, the decision was taken to create an entirely new club.

Pydna Kitros was dissolved and renamed, and the new club took its place in the Gamma Ethniki, the third tier, for 2017-18. Its official presentation, on 2 June 2017, is regarded as its founding date.

The name and the colours

The full name is New Football Club "Volos" (Neos Podosferikos Syllogos, NPS): a new club that simply carries the name of the city itself. For sponsorship reasons the team has also appeared as Volos Elabet.

The colours are blue and red, which give the club its nickname "Kyanerythroi" (the Blue-Reds). The sources we found do not explain how this combination was chosen.

Stripes, a harbour and Admiral

The home shirt is built on red and blue stripes. In Admiral's 2023-24 collection, the first shirt was striped with a polo collar, the second all red and the third all blue.

The brand photographed the kits at the city's historic port, highlighting Volos's maritime identity and the working people who built it. In this way the shirt ties the team to the city and its sea.

Two seasons, two titles

The rise was lightning fast. In 2017-18 Volos finished first in Group 4 of the Gamma Ethniki with 63 points, and in 2018-19 it won the Football League with 60 points.

In December 2018, after ten rounds, it had nine wins, one draw and an eight-point lead over second place. Just two years after its founding, from 2019-20, it was playing in the Super League.

From Neapoli to the Panthessaliko

The first games were played at the Neapoli Municipal Stadium, which the city refurbished in summer 2017 and which held 2,500. With promotion to the top flight the team moved to the Panthessaliko Stadium, built for the 2004 Olympic Games, with 22,700 seats.

Big nights followed. In March 2021 Volos beat AEK 1-0 in the Greek Cup, and in 2021-22 it beat Panathinaikos 3-1. In October 2021, under coach Guillermo Abascal, it even went top of the table after its first-ever win over Asteras Tripolis.

In 2022-23 it finished in the top six of the regular season and played in the play-offs, with Paolo Fernandes voted player of the year. Tasos Tsokanis holds the appearance record (175) and Vasilis Mantzis is the top scorer with 21 goals.

Since 2019 Volos has never left the Super League. In 2025-26 it finished eighth, with Kostas Bratsos on the bench, and it enters its second decade as a regular presence in the top flight.

Celebrate with us

Ten years, two promotions and a place among the big clubs: Volos has shown how quickly a new team can write history. The red and blue striped shirt is already a symbol of the city.

Happy birthday, Volos! The first decade is only the beginning.
