On 21 April 1937 a group of students at the Catholic University in Santiago gave official form to a club that is now one of Chile's biggest. Universidad Católica turns 90 on 21 April 2027. Its roots go back even further, and its shirt carries a cross and a band, each with a story of its own.
Students in a Santiago boarding house
As early as 1908, students of the Pontifical Catholic University were playing football as Universidad Católica Football Club. In 1927, with the backing of rector Carlos Casanueva, the university's sports federation was set up.
From 1930 the Católica students competed together with those of the University of Chile, in the Club Universitario de Deportes. But many felt the joint team did not represent them, and after 1936 the two sides went their separate ways.
So on 21 April 1937 the students met at a boarding house in the city and formally founded the club, with Augusto Gómez as its first president. As people said at the time, the team already existed and was simply waiting to be founded.
Crusaders and "the Band"
The name simply means "Catholic University" and recalls where it all began. Fans, though, call the team "UC", "Cruzados" (the Crusaders), or just "La Franja", "the Band".
Both nicknames point to the club's symbols: the cross on the crest and the band on the shirt. The very first shirt looked nothing like today's, as the 1909 team reportedly wore green.
White, a blue cross and red letters
The colours and emblem became official on 19 November 1927: a blue cross on a white background, with the initials "U.C. de Ch." in red. The Archbishop of Santiago, Crescente Errázuriz, gave each element its own meaning.
White stands for purity, the cross for Christ, and blue for something that comes from heaven. The red letters, by the same reading, are bathed in the divine blood of redemption.
The triangular shape of the crest recalls the banners of medieval crusader knights.
The band born in 1930
The shirt's most distinctive feature is the horizontal blue band across the chest, at heart level. According to the book "80 años cruzados por una pasión", it first appeared in 1930, at the University Olympics against the University of Chile.
Since then the white shirt with the blue band has stayed essentially the same, with only the details changing. In 1984 Adidas added a blue collar and a narrow band, in 1997 Reebok added blue and red trim, and in 2005 Nike moved the band higher up.
In 2010 a club shirt was placed in the time capsule marking Chile's bicentenary.
Titles, finals and four in a row
The first league title came in 1949, with Argentine star José Manuel Moreno, signed from River Plate. More followed in 1954, 1961, 1966, 1984 and 1987, when the press dubbed the team "La Máquina", "the Machine".
In 1993 UC reached the Copa Libertadores final, where it fell to São Paulo. As runner-up it earned a place in the Copa Interamericana, and on 1 November 1994, coached by Manuel Pellegrini, it won its only international title.
The brightest modern chapter came from 2018 to 2021, with four straight league titles, a Chilean record. In all it has won 16 league titles, and since 1988 it has had its own home, San Carlos de Apoquindo, now called Claro Arena.
The legends of the band
Its history features goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone, Raimundo Infante, Alberto Fouillioux and Néstor Isella. Mario Lepe holds the appearance record with 639 games, and Rodrigo Barrera is the top scorer with 118 goals.
The academy produced Gary Medel, a key man in Chile's 2010 and 2014 World Cup squads. José Pedro Fuenzalida, meanwhile, is the player with the most titles at the club, 11.
