On 31 January 1921 Clube Desportivo Santa Clara was born in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. On 31 January 2027 the team that carries the colours of an entire archipelago turns 106 years old. It is the story of an island in the middle of the Atlantic that managed to bring Europe to its ground.

From a neighbourhood of Ponta Delgada

The name comes from Santa Clara, a parish on the western edge of Ponta Delgada, near the port. The club is seen as the heir of earlier teams with the same name and grew out of the "Santa Clara championships" of 1919-1920. Its creation is credited to Rodrigo Neto.

Formal organisation came a few years later: in May 1927 the first board was elected and in July of the same year the statutes were approved. The first president was Captain Eduardo dos Reis Rebelo, and the first squad had just 14 players. Of the parish's teams, this is the only one that stood the test of time.

Red and white from day one

The club's colours have been red and white from the start. The first shirts, however, were not plain but had horizontal stripes in the two colours.

Today red also dominates the club's crest, as we will see below. On the islands, many see Santa Clara as an unofficial "national team" of the Azores.

A crest with nine stars

The old crest showed a red lion above a ball on a white field. For much of its history it closely resembled Benfica's crest, which, according to the club's leadership, caused confusion and denied the club an identity of its own.

So a public contest was opened, and in March 2024 the members voted between three proposals. The new crest, mainly red and simpler, carries the year 1921 and nine stars, one for each island of the Azores. It has been in use since the 2024-25 season.

"The Azoreans" and Pauleta

The team's nickname is Os Açorianos, the Azoreans. Its home is the Estádio de São Miguel, with around 12,500 seats, while in the past it played at the Campo Municipal Jácome Correia.

The islands' most famous son, Pauleta, passed through Santa Clara early in his career. He later became a star at Paris Saint-Germain, Bordeaux and Deportivo La Coruña.

From the first promotion to Europe

The big moment came on 30 May 1999, when a 4-3 win over Aves sent Santa Clara into the top flight for the first time. They went straight back down, but won the Segunda Liga in 2000-01 and returned. In 2002, in the Intertoto Cup, they recorded their first European win against Shirak.

After fifteen years in the second tier, the team went up again in 2018. Sixth place in 2020-21 took them to the Conference League, where they knocked out Shkupi and Olimpija Ljubljana before being stopped by Partizan. After another relegation and the Liga 2 title in 2024 came fifth place in 2024-25 with a record 57 points, the best campaign in the club's history.

That season brought European nights back to the island: in the 2025-26 Conference League Santa Clara got past Varaždin and Larne before going out to Shamrock Rovers in the play-off round.

Celebrate with us
