On 15 November 1900 three friends from Nijmegen's lower town, near the bank of the Waal, set up a small football team called Eendracht. Today we know it as NEC Nijmegen, and on 15 November 2026 it turns 126 years old. Greek fans now also remember it for a summer night in 2026 against Olympiacos.

From "Unity" to NEC

According to English Wikipedia, the founders were August Lodenstijn, Antoon Kuypers and Wouter de Lent, boys from working-class families. Eendracht means "unity". According to Voetbal International, the name came from the motto "Eendracht maakt macht" ("unity makes strength"), written above a gate on the main square.

In April 1910 the team merged with local club NVV Nijmegen. The new club was named Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie, roughly "Nijmegen Unity Combination", and its initials gave us the familiar NEC.

Red, green and black

In the early years the team wore a black shirt with a band in red and green. Over time the colours swapped roles: the traditional shirt is now red with a green chest band trimmed in black. The Dutch call it the "balkenshirt", the shirt with the bar.

For the fans the bar is more than a design. In 2016 supporters held a vote, and the classic chest band came back, if only by a narrow margin.

A home in Goffert park

The Goffertstadion was built inside the park of the same name by unemployed workers and opened in 1939. NEC moved there in the 1940s, and in 1992 bought it for a symbolic one guilder. Since its renovation in the late 1990s it holds around 12,650 spectators.

For many years NEC was a force in the eastern Netherlands, with regional titles in 1939, 1946 and 1947. It climbed to the second tier in 1964 and reached the Eredivisie in 1967. In 2015 it also won the Eerste Divisie title.

The club of lost finals

NEC has a peculiar relationship with the Dutch Cup. It has reached the final six times (1973, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2024 and 2026) and lost all six, most recently 5-1 to AZ in April 2026. In 1983-84 it played in the Cup Winners' Cup, getting past Brann before going out to Barcelona.

NEC returned to Europe in the 2003-04 UEFA Cup, where it went out to Wisła Kraków. In 2008-09 it did better, getting through the group stage before stopping in the round of 32 against Hamburg.

Its academy produced internationals Frans Thijssen and Jan Peters. The scoring record belongs to Frans Janssen with 126 goals, and the appearance record to Sije Visser with 490.

The night against Olympiacos

In 2025-26 NEC finished third in the Eredivisie and earned a ticket to the Champions League qualifiers. In the third qualifying round it met Olympiacos: 0-0 in Piraeus and 2-1 in Nijmegen, with a goal from Bryan Linssen and the winner from Emre Mor.

In the play-off Bodø/Glimt proved too strong, but the team carried on into the Europa League league phase. For a club that started with three friends on a riverbank, it was a summer that will not be forgotten.

Celebrate with us

126 years on, the red shirt with the green chest bar is one of the most recognisable in the Netherlands. Happy birthday to NEC and its fans at the Goffert, and may the seventh final finally bring the Cup home!
