On 21 June 2004 a Football League club changed its name and identity after its move from south London to Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes Dons turns 23 on 21 June 2027. It is one of the youngest clubs in English professional football, with a beginning that is still debated.

A new town looks for a team

Milton Keynes, a relatively new town north of London, had no Football League club. Pete Winkelman, a former music industry executive who had lived there since 1993, wanted to change that. Wimbledon owner Ron Noades had already considered moving the club there as early as the late 1970s.

In 2001 Wimbledon chairman Charles Koppel announced that the club would move to Milton Keynes. The Football League opposed the plan, but in May 2002 an independent FA commission approved it by two votes to one.

A decision that divided

Many Wimbledon supporters strongly disagreed and in 2002 founded their own club, AFC Wimbledon. Relations between the two clubs have remained tense ever since.

Wimbledon went into administration in 2003 and in September that year began playing at the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes. In 2004 Winkelman's consortium took over the club.

In 2006 the club agreed with the Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) not to claim Wimbledon's history. In 2007 Wimbledon's trophies were handed over to the London Borough of Merton.

New name, new badge, white shirt

Along with the name Milton Keynes Dons came a new badge and new colours: the team was dressed in white. The first badge carried the Roman numerals MMIV, meaning 2004, to mark the birth year of the new club.

The first shirt under the new name was made by A-Line in 2004-06. Nike, Errea and Castore were among the suppliers that followed.

The first competitive match was played on 7 August 2004, a 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

A stadium with a royal opening

In the 2007-08 season the club moved to Stadium MK in Denbigh. The 30,500-seat ground was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in November 2007.

Its construction was also backed financially by supermarket chain Asda. It has hosted the 2014 Women's FA Cup final and four matches at the 2022 Women's Euro.

Wembley, 4-0 over United and Dele Alli

The first big year was 2007-08. Under Paul Ince the team won the League Two title and the Football League Trophy, beating Grimsby 2-0 at Wembley.

In 2014 came the most famous night: a 4-0 win over Manchester United in the League Cup. That same season the club won promotion to the Championship for the first time, staying there for one year. Back in 2013 it had reached the FA Cup fifth round for the first time.

The academy produced Dele Alli, who joined Tottenham in 2015 and became the first MK Dons graduate to make a full England debut. Dean Lewington played 791 league games from 2004 to 2025, and in 2026 the team finished second in League Two and went up to League One.
