On 19 September 1928 Frosinone took on the name and identity from which it officially counts its history. On 19 September 2027 the club turns 99 years old, and it celebrates where it now belongs: in Serie A. Here is how a side from the Ciociaria area, south of Rome, became Italy's most stubborn "canaries".

A story with two starting points

The club's roots go back further than 1928. On 5 March 1906 Unione Sportiva Frusinate was founded, chaired by the lawyer Leone Vivoli, who later became the town's mayor. According to its statute, its aim was to spread gymnastics, fencing, football and athletics among young people.

The club, however, has chosen 19 September 1928 as its "birthday". That day, during the fascist era, it was renamed CXIX Legione M.V.S.N. Frosinone and joined the Italian Football Federation, and in 1929 it became Bellator Frusino. The team was refounded in 1959 and again in 1990, but the thread was never broken.

From red and blue to yellow and blue

The name is simply that of the town, the Roman Frusino. The 1906 statute set the colours as red and blue, taken from the town's coat of arms with its rampant lion and the motto "Bellator Frusino".

Over the years the colours became first pale yellow and then yellow and light blue, the colours of the provincial coat of arms. That is where the nicknames "Canarini" (canaries) and "Giallazzurri" come from, while fans also call the team "Ciociari", after its home region.

The lion on the crest and the shirt

The town's lion is the constant hero of the crest. In 1963 it appeared in gold on a yellow and blue shield, in the 1970s it moved into a round badge with a Telstar ball, and since 2006 it has stood in blue on a shield with a yellow and blue ribbon.

The classic shirt is yellow with light-blue details. For the 90th anniversary in 2018, the Italian brand Zeus made a limited edition with a retro drawstring collar, a sash across the chest bearing the lion and the embroidery "1928 90 2018". It was worn for just one match, against Sassuolo.

From the Matusa to the Stirpe

For decades the team's home was the municipal ground built in 1932, which locals nicknamed the Matusa, meaning "the old one", because of its age. The legendary Giuseppe Meazza even played a friendly there in 1932.

Since October 2017 Frosinone has played at the modern Stadio Benito Stirpe, with around 16,000 seats. A ground built for a team that never stops dreaming.

Ups, downs and the big return

The first promotion to Serie A came on 16 May 2015, with a 3-1 win over Crotone at the Matusa. The club earned its first top-flight point in Turin, drawing 1-1 with Juventus thanks to a goal by Leonardo Blanchard.

Promotion followed again in 2018 via a play-off against Palermo, and the Serie B title in 2023, but staying up always proved hard. On 8 May 2026 Massimiliano Alvini's side beat Mantova 5-0, finished second behind Venezia and went up for the fourth time.

Players to wear the shirt include the goalscorer Massimo Palanca, former Italy international Vincenzo Fresia, Éder, Federico Dionisi and Federico Gatti, who left for Juventus.
