On 30 May 1904, in the university town on the edge of the Black Forest, the club that would later become SC Freiburg was born. On 30 May 2027 SC Freiburg turns 123. And its story is full of patience, attractive football and coaches who stayed for years.

Two clubs, one Sport-Club

In March 1904 Freiburger Fußballverein 04 was founded. About two months later came FC Schwalbe Freiburg, "the Swallow", and 30 May 1904 is the date recorded as the founding of today's club.

Schwalbe became FC Mars in 1905 and Union Freiburg in 1906, while FV 04 was renamed Sportverein Freiburg 04 in 1909. In 1912 the two merged and Sport-Club Freiburg was born.

From black and yellow to red and white

After the 1912 merger the club's colours were black, white and yellow. Since 1952 Freiburg has been white and red.

The home shirt is traditionally red with black details, and several versions have featured black vertical stripes. The away shirt is usually white, often almost the same design in reverse colours.

The griffin on the crest

The oval crest shows a griffin's head on the left and the initials SCF on the right. The griffin, the mythical creature with a lion's body and an eagle's head, has been the club's emblem for decades.

The sources disagree on when it joined the crest. Some say it was adopted with the 1912 merger. Others say that from 1952 to 1958 the badge carried only the initials, and that the griffin appeared in 1958 in the diagonally split white and black design.

Finke, Streich and the "Breisgau Brazilians"

Volker Finke took over in 1991 and stayed 16 years, a record in German professional football. In 1993 he took the team into the Bundesliga for the first time, as 2. Bundesliga champions, and in 1995 to third place and the UEFA Cup.

That team's attractive football gave rise, in the mid-1990s, to the nickname "Breisgau-Brasilianer", the Breisgau Brazilians. From 2012 to 2024 the face of the club was Christian Streich, who led it to its first German Cup final in 2022, lost on penalties to RB Leipzig.

Streich also knew bitter moments, such as the 2015 relegation, which many called the most needless of all time. But the team came back, and in 2023 it topped its Europa League group before going out to Juventus in the round of 16.

A new stadium and a European final

From 1954 to 2021 home was the Dreisamstadion. In October 2021 the team moved to the Europa-Park Stadion, with 34,700 seats.

In 2025-26 Freiburg reached the first European final in its history, in the Europa League, after knocking out Genk, Celta Vigo and Braga. On 20 May 2026 in Istanbul it lost 3-0 to Aston Villa, but the journey was unforgettable.

The shirt has been worn by Joachim Löw, the club's honorary captain, Papiss Demba Cissé, Nils Petersen and Matthias Ginter. Vincenzo Grifo is the club's top Bundesliga scorer with 72 goals, and Christian Günter wears the armband.
