Arouca was born on Christmas Day, 25 December 1952, in a small town near Porto. On 25 December 2026 it turns 74 years old. It is one of the loveliest "small club" stories in European football.

A Christmas present

According to Portuguese Wikipedia, the founder of Futebol Clube de Arouca was Fernando Pinto Calçada. For more than fifty years the team played in the regional leagues of the Aveiro district. It was a small provincial club, far from the lights of the top flight.

Its first ground was the Campo Afonso Pinto Magalhães. It was named after the Arouca-born businessman who founded the SONAE group and helped buy the land. Today it has an artificial pitch and hosts the club's academy.

Yellow, blue and a wolf

Arouca's colours are yellow and navy blue. The sources we checked do not explain where they come from. The classic kit is a yellow shirt with blue details, navy shorts and yellow socks.

The players are called "Lobos", the wolves, and the Portuguese press often calls them "the wolves of the Serra da Freita", after the mountain above the town. The "Arouquenses" have made the wolf part of their identity. You can even see it on the shirts.

The 2026-27 shirt, made by Skita, is yellow with a navy polo collar and cuffs. A subtle pattern on the front is inspired by the region and the club's wolf. It was launched with the "Naturalmente Arouca" campaign, in which local residents wore it around the town.

From regional football to the Primeira Liga

The big change began in 2006, when the Estádio Municipal de Arouca opened in the Arda river valley, with 5,600 seats. Around the same time the team reached the third tier. Four promotions in seven years followed.

In May 2013 Arouca reached the Primeira Liga for the first time. On 23 August 2015 it beat Benfica 1-0 and went top of the table. It was the first time in its history.

A European night against Olympiacos

In 2015-16, under coach Lito Vidigal, Arouca finished fifth and earned a ticket to the Europa League. In the third qualifying round it knocked out Dutch side Heracles on away goals. In the play-off it was drawn against Olympiacos.

The Portuguese lost the return leg 2-1 in Greece after extra time and went out 3-1 on aggregate. A year later they were relegated, and in 2019 they dropped even lower, to the Campeonato de Portugal. But the wolves did not give up.

The second climb

They went up again in 2020, and in 2021 they returned to the Primeira Liga with a play-off win over Rio Ave. In 2022-23, under Armando Evangelista, they finished fifth again and qualified for the Conference League. There they were stopped in the third qualifying round by Norway's Brann.

The appearance record belongs to David Simão with 222 games. In 2025-26 Vasco Seabra's team finished eighth, another calm year in the top flight for a club that twenty years ago was playing regional football.

Celebrate with us

Seventy-four years on, Arouca proves that a small place can have a big team. And every Christmas it blows out its candles together with the whole town.

Happy birthday, Arouca! Merry Christmas to the wolves of the Serra da Freita, and here's to many more European nights.
